Every year, thousands of
parrots are relinquished to rescues and sanctuaries that are already filled to
overflowing with unwanted, neglected, abused, or abandoned exotic birds. All to
often, the reason for this happening is that people acquire an exotic bird on
impulse without guidance or understanding into just how demanding parrot
ownership can be. It's always too messy, too noisy, too destructive or any one
of a number of things that parrots do, just being parrots. It's just "not
what they expected". One has to ask "How would they know what to expect?"
We believe that educating the public about the problem is the key to stemming
this unfortunate tide. To this end, we at PARS conduct an outreach program
to make important information about parrot ownership available to the public,
hopefully before they acquire a bird. Our goal is to achieve this through...
