Gizmo is a Sun
Conure. The fact that he is even alive today is nothing short of a
miracle and testiment to the extraordinary skill, dedication and determination
of Dr. Jan Strother and her staff at North Alabama Cat and Bird Veterinary
Clinic. Shortly after Gizmo was surrendered, I went into the vets office to get
admission photos and was so shocked at what I saw when I met this bird that
pictures completely slipped from my mind. Here was a bird with approximate 60%
of its chest missing due to self-mutilation. Even the vet said she had
never in all her years seen a bird with such massive damage that was still
alive. My thought was "don't worry about photos, this little one isn't going to
make it". Gizmo, however, was no where near ready to give up and still had
plenty of fight in him. After approximately a week of intensive care, it became
apparent that the wound simply wasn't healing due to the extent of the damage
and surgery to remove the entirity of what remained of the breast muscles was
performed. That was the turning point for little Gizmo, and his recovery has
been nothing short of phenomenal since. As you can see in the photo at left,
Gizmo appears to be almost perfectly normal and is living happy and healthy at
the PARS facility today.

This cute
little fellow is Tater, a Quaker Parrot. At a little over one year of age, he
is still a baby and about as sweet as a Quaker gets. Tater had to be separated
from a loving owner due to serious allergy problems that his presense in the
household created.

- Should be available for adoption soon. |

This little guy
is Raspberry, named for his love of giving everyone the "raspberry".
Raspberry's previous caregiver was forced to give him up after a recent move to
Tennessee where she learned from authorities that it is illegal to own a Quaker
and the bird would be confiscated and euthanized if not gotten out of the state
immediately. Thanks to the assistance of the Quaker Parrot Society rescue
group, PARS was notified of the situation and had the bird out of Tennessee in
little more then 12 hours.

over time.

This beautiful little fellow is Champ, a 3 year old
Sun Conure. He came to us from the Auburn Humane Society with litle history
about his past. Champ is splay-legged but remains quite mobile and
self-sufficient in an approproately laid-out and equipped cage. This condition
could have been fairly easily corrected as a chick had the grossly incompetant
and negligant breeder who caused this cared to do so. Once the bird is older,
surgery is required but that is not possible in Champs case. X-rays show that
numerous bones have been broken in the past
including both legs, hips and sockets making corrective sugery
impossible

This absolutely pristine guy is Valentino. He
is a 5 year old male Blue & Gold Macaw and one of those
birds you rarely see in rescue work that is every bit a sweet as
he is beautiful. Val comes to us because of health issues in his previous
home and a job change keeping the primary care giver on travel 3 weeks out
4. Val was a deeply loved and treasured member of his former family, but they
realized that they could no longer give him all that he needs and had the
courage to give him up to a new home where he can be pampered.
