Parrots and Allergies.
Home So you want to own a parrot?

Does anyone in your home have allergies? How about dust or dander sensitivities? Do you have expensive, dust sensitive equipment, art work or furnishings in you home?

If your answer to any of these questions is yes, then you could be in for a serious problem with a parrot in the house. If you have no allergies, but just hate dusting, then you most probably are going to be one very unhappy parrot owner.

All birds produce dust and dander to some degree. Some parrots are particularily known for this, producing not only dust and dander, but a fine oily powder as well. In fact, Cockatoos and African Grey parrots are two species that produce so much dust and powder that they can present a serious health risk to other species of parrots in the immediate proximity not to speak of humans in the home that might be sensitive. Macaws are particularily susceptible to serious respiratory problems when exposed for long periods to these two species unless high efficiency HEPA grade air filtration units are utilized.

The photograph at right is an example of a 10 day accumulation of the white dust and powder from a single African Grey parrot. A spot has been wiped clean to illustrate the amount of dust that can accumulate even on a vertical surface. If you can not live with this for the next 20 - 80 years, then a nice puppy or kitten might be a better choice as a pet for you.
