Adoption Policy & Procedures
Adoption...

Thank you for your interest in adopting a bird from Parrots-R-4Ever Avian Rescue and Sanctuary. Adopting a bird from us is not easy or quick. In placing a bird for adoption, our goal and our obligation is to get each bird into the right home for life. Our adoption process is designed to insure that potential adopters are properly prepared and have a full understanding of exactly what they are commiting themselves to in parrot ownership. We realize that our requirements are stringent, and somewhat time-consuming, but we do it in the best interest of the birds.PARS reserves the right to alter our adoption policies and/or procedures on a case-by-case basis when, in the judgement of PARS, it is in the best interest of the bird to do so.  Our goal is to place each bird we adopt into a safe, attentive, stable and long-term home. Therefore, PARS reserves the right to refuse adoption to any person for any reason that it believes is not consistant with these goals.

Please be aware that we can not and will not discuss adoption or availability without first receiving a fully completed Adoption Application.

Step 1:     Please begin by reviewing the contents of this page and the sample adoption contract to familiarize yourself with our adoption process and  policies.

Step 2:   Complete an  Adoption Application Form and mail it to the address below.  Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Step 3:   Upon reciept, we will review you application for basic qualifications and experience as well as what species of bird you are most interested in adopting.

Step 4:   If we do not have any of the species you are interested in residence at the time, we will let you know and place you on our watch list in the event that a species of interest comes in.

Step 5:  If we have one or more of the species you are interested in, we will contact you to arrange a first visit to our facility. This is to give you an opportunity to meet the bird and for it to meet you. Multiple visits are usually required to objectively determine compatibility so you may be asked to make from 1 to 7 additional visits to spend time with the bird before a determination is made. Once there have been sufficient visits for you and your PARS representative to jointly determine that there is a high probability of success in the adoption we will discuss with you what preparations need to be made to receive the bird in your home. When you are satified that all preparations are made,  we will schedule a visit to your home to deliver the bird to you.

Step 6:  When we bring the bird to your home, we will first verify that you have made appropriate preparations to care for the bird in your home. We are not Good Housekeeping Magazine or the Health Department and are not interested in passing judgement on your home or life style. We are simply verifing that the bird is provided with a clean, safe and appropriately sized cage (and accessory items) in a safe, toxin-free and stimulating environment. If there is a problem in the preparations that presents a threat to the well being of the bird that can not be satisfactorily corrected immediately, we will retain custody of the bird and schedule a second visit after corrects have been made. If everything is satisfactory, we will collect the adoption fee per the schedule below, enter into a 90-day probationary adoption contract and leave the bird in your care.

We are not a "reseller" of  birds, but we do have to pay the bills.  Though we do receive occasional cash donations, adoption fees pay the vast majority of the avian care expenses at PARS. We make every effort to keep our adoption fees as low as possible, yet keep the bill-collectors off our back. Though we take in and care for many birds whose medical care expenses far exceed their adoption fee we try to keep the fees uniform at approximately 1/3 the retail price one would expect to pay a breeder or pet store.

If, at the end of the probationary period, this appears to be a successful adoption the Adoption Contract will become permanent . However, if we have reason to believe at any point in time during the probationary period that it is not in the best interest of the bird to remain in your custody, we will request and require the immediate return of the bird. Should we have reason to require the return of the bird,  you will not be compensated for any of your expenses related to the adopted bird while the bird was in your custody. Please review the Sample Adoption Contract for additional details about returns and refunds.

After the adoption is finalized, we will be available for follow-on assistance whenever you might need us.
